Vegetarian classes - re-visited

Post by ellenr »

Hello folks,
I found this topic in a thread in 'Outreach' and wanted to bring it back to life, as I would be interested.
I am not vegie, but would like to learn more about planning simple vegie meals, as I am not a vegie only bec. of laziness and lack of planning.
I am an animal rights person so being a vegie wd definitely be more consistent.

Also, I like the idea on the thread of showing movies.
Recently on WBAI they played excerpts of "Food Inc", a documentary about how we get our food, which describes many facets of what we eat -
new to me - for example - bec Americans prefer "white" meat of the chicken, they have changed chickens so they produce more white meat.
Sicko!
And how workers in meat-processing plants get allergic to antibiotics cuz they handle so many, and hence if they need to take an antibiotic they can't.
And when NAFTA destroyed the jobs of millions of Mexican farmers the meat-processing industry sent buses to Mexico to recruit them.

I'd love to to be able to show movies like this to people, especially people who do not already think like we do.

If it seems too ambitious to show films, and to create a wider community for them, we could just start with the vegie cooking class, and discussions among ourselves.

Here is the thread:

If this link doesn't work, just go to the Outreach Forum and you will find it.

Hey Ellen!
In outreach we tried in a couple different ways to have these veggie classes but the connections fell through or the person willing to run it got sick. We are currently looking into having speakers come in and give presentations about various topics and I am contacting several ones to give vegan/vegetarian talks.
As for the movies, I agree it would be good for the co-op to do more movie screenings. There are a few issues that need to be discussed before we can do this though, plus the limits of space to screen things in the co-op.
As of now, I can recommend a few things to substitute for our inability to set things up for now.

1) a shameless promotion, is to read the article I write in the newsletter about how to be a lazy vegan where I give hints on cooking and eating animal free

2) There are online vegetarian/vegan cooking shows you can find online: http://www.theppk.com/shows/ and http://delicioustv.com/ are two good ones.

3) You could sign up for Vegan at Heart: http://www.kindgreenplanet.org/programs ... t/welcome/ which is an email support system that gives hints, tips and reminders of how to start moving away from animals in your diet but still staying healthy and not cheating yourself out of your normal lifestyle.

4) Set aside an evening and watch the movie Earthlings: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... fe=active# Warning, it is graphic and you'll probably cry many time throughout, but if you care about animal rights, it is a must see.

That's all I got for now. If you have questions or more ideas, please feel free to contact me or keep this thread going.
